About Demelza
Demelza is a quiet, sleepy little hamlet in the parish of St Wenn, yet it is famous for providing Winston Graham with the name of one of his key characters in the Poldark series. It is THE original Demelza, the birthplace of the name whose origins are thought to derive from the Celtic word for hill fort. This would make sense as there are still earthworks from an ancient hill fort or castle, visible today.
It’s a great place to see wildlife. Buzzards, garden birds, and bats are commonly seen. Badgers, foxes, stoats, and deer can occasionally be seen in the surrounding area. At night, the owls call to each other, and by day, the area is popular with horse riders. From spring to autumn, we have sheep in our paddock and neighbouring fields.
The sky provides its own show, changing quickly as fronts roll in, beautiful mackerel skies, sensational sunsets and by night, with little light pollution, the stars are bright and the moon luminescent. Sometimes, it is possible to pick up the Northern Lights.
Cornwall has many stunning beaches, more than 20 are within 30 minutes drive from Demelza, including Fistral, Crantock, Holywell Bay, Watergate Bay, Harlyn, Charlestown and Carlyon.
